September 25, 2026, Huis ter Heide

Huis ter Heide near de Moer is not far from Tilburg, yet it is an oasis of peace here. It is a versatile area with forest, heathland, and fens. In 1976, Huis ter Heide came into the possession of Natuurmonumenten. What was once a forestry estate with mainly production forest has grown into a rich and vibrant nature reserve over fifty years. The uniform coniferous forest made way for a varied natural forest where plants and animals are once again given ample space. The pine marten once again moves like an acrobat through the treetops, and the badger has also returned to the area. An extensive fen area developed in the southern part. 24 fens have been dug here, which together form a valuable habitat for all sorts of amphibians and birds. Thanks to a nature bridge connecting to the Loonse en Drunense Duinen, the landscape connection has been restored, and animals can move safely and find new habitats and conspecifics. The Trappist Monastery (Abbey Our Lady of Koningshoeven) is also the place where you can get two stamps (at the shop and the Maria chapel) in your booklet of the Camino Brabant Pilgrimages. And of course, don't forget to look around this beautiful Abbey!

In NL, cycling is simply fun because of the excellent ground surface and the general 'cyclist nature'.

It is also certain that around 1500 a new stone church was built in Gilze, a cruciform church with a tower. But it didn't stand there for long. In 1584, plundering soldiers set it on fire. Only a ruin remained. The parishioners provisionally sealed off a small part to still be able to use the church. Because it would take a long time before they had enough money to start the reconstruction. Only in 1609 were the tower and the nave restored; the two transepts were still open at that time. And it was 1617 before the church was completely finished again. This year still stands at the top of the middle gable of the church. The entrance was also in that same gable at the time, but the parishioners later bricked it up with a tombstone. In the current church, this is the oldest part. Despite all efforts, the Catholics lost their church again more than thirty years later. And from 1648 onwards, they had to make do with a hidden or barn church. This was because after the Peace of Münster, the Protestants also took over the churches. When the Catholics were allowed to use their church again in 1818, after one hundred and seventy years, it soon became apparent that the building had become too small. The number of parishioners had increased considerably over the years. Therefore, between 1880 and 1881, it was enlarged and embellished. Two side aisles were added along the nave.

It's just along the Wilhelmona Canal. There's really not much to it in itself; you're better off cycling into Orischot, which is much more fun.

A pleasant, relaxing cycling route. At the Stönner-Meijwaard Bridge in Oirschot, there's a sound column where you can listen to relive the events of World War II.
