With the reclamation of the peat colonies around 1600, the village of Oude Pekela was founded. Shortly thereafter, between 1683 and 1685, a simple hall church was built, financed by the city of Groningen, which also became the church's owner.

The Romanesque church of Wedde was built in the first half of the 13th century. In the 15th century, the church was expanded and raised. This gave the church a more Gothic appearance. Because the church had suffered from warfare in 1666, the choir and nave were lowered.[1] The windows of the church were enlarged after the Reformation. Before that, the building had narrow Gothic windows. The tower of the church was built against the church much later, in 1860. This replaced a freestanding wooden bell tower. The church has a pulpit from the 17th century, a bailiff's bench from around 1700 with the coat of arms of Groningen[1] and a choir organ without pedal built by Flentrop in 1979. This organ was placed on the organ gallery and replaced the harmonium that had been here since 1904.
