Léomont hill in Vitrimont was the scene of violent fighting between the French and German armies during the First World War. A monument commemorates the soldiers of the Iron Division who defended it. From the top of the hill you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The Colline du Léomont is a place of memory and nature that will appeal to history buffs and nature lovers.

Very nice forest with numerous deciduous trees, many quite large gravel and dirt paths. Worth a ride if you are in the area and want a shadowy ride when it's sunny :) Sorry for the only photo I took on my way (a noticeable oak tree). I should have taken a couple more.

There are three dedicated traffic-free gravel bike routes detailed in this guide, all offering a moderate challenge. These routes primarily explore the serene forest trails and rolling terrain characteristic of the region, ensuring a peaceful ride away from vehicular traffic.
The gravel bike trails around Moriviller feature a varied terrain, ideal for gravel cycling. You'll encounter extensive forest paths, offering shaded sections and diverse surfaces. The region also includes rolling hills, providing a mix of engaging challenges and scenic beauty. While some routes might touch upon river valleys or canal towpaths for flatter sections, the focus here is on unpaved roads and tracks through natural environments.
Yes, all the routes featured in this guide are circular, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, you can enjoy the Forêt de Vitrimont – Le Léomont loop from Blainville - Damelevières, which offers a moderate 19.5 km ride, or the longer Forêt de Vitrimont – Vitrimont Forest loop from Blainville - Damelevières covering 26.8 km.
The trails often lead through dense forests, providing a rich natural environment. While specific viewpoints are not always marked, the region's rolling terrain and proximity to areas like the Lorraine Regional Natural Park mean you'll experience beautiful natural landscapes. The Forêt de Vitrimont – Le Léomont loop from Blainville - Damelevières, for instance, passes near Léomont Hill, which is known for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
While the routes themselves focus on natural, traffic-free paths, the broader region is rich in history. You might find attractions like the Moyen Castle or the Adoménil Castle within a reasonable distance. The area around Lunéville, close to Moriviller, also features Lunéville Castle, known as the 'Versailles of Lorraine'.
All the traffic-free gravel bike trails listed in this guide are rated as 'moderate' difficulty. They involve some elevation gain, with routes like the Forêt de Vitrimont – Vitrimont Forest loop from Blainville - Damelevières featuring over 200 meters of ascent, making them suitable for riders with some experience looking for an engaging ride.
Given that all routes are rated 'moderate' and involve some elevation, they are best suited for riders with a basic level of fitness and some gravel biking experience. While they are traffic-free, beginners might find the distances (around 20-27 km) and ascents challenging. For families with younger children, flatter canal towpaths in the wider region might be more appropriate, though not specifically covered in this guide's 'no traffic' gravel focus.
The region's extensive forests and varied terrain make it enjoyable across multiple seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer provides shaded paths through the forests, which can be a welcome relief. Winter riding is possible, but be prepared for potentially muddy or icy conditions on unpaved trails, especially after rain or snow.
The routes themselves are designed for immersive cycling through natural landscapes. However, you might pass by interesting natural features such as the Ponds of the Saussaie de Bayon. The focus is on the journey through the quiet forests and rolling hills, offering a chance to connect with nature away from busy roads.
While specific reviews for these routes are limited, the komoot community generally praises the tranquility and natural beauty of similar forest and rural trails in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. Riders often appreciate the escape from traffic, the varied terrain, and the opportunity to explore the serene woodlands and rolling landscapes.
Accessing the starting points of these specific routes, such as Blainville - Damelevières or Rehainviller, via public transport might require some planning. It's advisable to check local bus or train schedules for connections to these smaller towns, as direct routes might be limited. Many riders opt to drive to the starting points, especially with bikes.
Moriviller itself is a small commune. For cafes, pubs, or accommodation, you would likely need to look towards larger nearby towns such as Lunéville or Blainville-Damelevières. These towns offer more amenities where you can refuel or find a place to stay before or after your ride.
