Difficult pass at first, especially in the heat. Easier after the first third. Be careful of the unlit tunnel 1 km from the summit. For added peace and quiet, the road leading up to the pass is closed to traffic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Our guide features 3 dedicated no traffic gravel bike trails around Vignec, all offering challenging rides through the stunning Pyrenean landscape. These routes are designed to keep you away from busy roads, allowing for a more immersive experience.
The terrain around Vignec is diverse, characterized by Pyrenean passes, glacial lakes, and the picturesque Aure Valley. You'll encounter a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, including gravel roads and mountain paths. Expect significant elevation changes as you navigate iconic passes like Col d'Aspin and Hourquette d'Ancizan.
Absolutely! The region is rich in natural beauty. You can explore stunning glacial lakes such as Lake Orédon, Lac d'Aubert, and Lake Oule. The routes often pass through or near majestic peaks and offer panoramic views of the Pyrenees. The Col d'Aspin – Hourquette d'Ancizan loop, for instance, takes you through two well-known Pyrenean mountain passes with breathtaking scenery.
The best time for gravel biking in Vignec, especially on higher passes, is typically from late spring (May/June) through early autumn (September/October). During these months, snowmelt has usually cleared the higher routes like Col d'Aspin and Hourquette d'Ancizan, and the weather is generally more stable. This period also allows you to enjoy the vibrant flora and fauna of the Pyrenees National Park and Néouvielle Nature Reserve.
While the routes in this guide are rated as 'difficult' due to significant elevation, the broader area around Vignec and Saint-Lary-Soulan does offer easier paths suitable for families. For a truly traffic-free experience, consider exploring sections of the Aure Valley or specific paths within the Pyrenees National Park that are designated for cycling, keeping in mind that some areas may require permits or have specific rules.
Bringing dogs on trails in the Pyrenees requires careful consideration. While many areas are dog-friendly, specific rules apply within protected zones like the Pyrenees National Park, where dogs are often restricted or must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. Always check local regulations for the specific trail or area you plan to visit. For general gravel biking, ensure your dog is fit for the distance and terrain, and always carry enough water for both of you.
Parking is generally available in the villages that serve as starting points for these routes. For example, you can find parking in Cadeilhan-Trachère, which is a starting point for the Saint Lary Bike Park – Portet Pass loop and the Col d'Aspin – Hourquette d'Ancizan loop. For routes starting near Bourisp, such as the Hourquette d'Ancizan – Lac de Payolle loop, parking can be found in the village itself or at designated trailheads.
Public transport options in the Hautes-Pyrénées, particularly for carrying bikes, can be limited, especially to smaller villages like Vignec. Buses often connect larger towns like Saint-Lary-Soulan, but their capacity for bikes varies. It's advisable to check with local transport providers in advance regarding bike carriage policies and schedules. Driving to the starting points is often the most flexible option for gravel bikers.
Yes, when cycling within the Pyrenees National Park or other protected natural reserves like the Néouvielle Nature Reserve, specific rules apply to preserve the environment and wildlife. While many gravel roads are accessible, some trails might be restricted to hikers or require special permits. Always respect signage, stay on marked paths, and be aware of regulations regarding dogs, camping, and fire. It's recommended to consult the official Pyrenees National Park website for the most up-to-date information before your ride.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 3.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the challenging climbs and rewarding descents, the stunning panoramic views from the mountain passes, and the sense of immersion in nature due to the low traffic. The diverse terrain, from forest paths to high-alpine gravel, is also frequently highlighted as a major draw.
While the routes themselves are designed to be traffic-free and often pass through remote areas, you will find opportunities to refuel in the villages at the start or end of the trails, or in nearby towns like Saint-Lary-Soulan. It's always wise to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially on longer routes like the Col d'Aspin – Hourquette d'Ancizan loop, as amenities can be sparse between villages.
