Mugron is a small hilltop town with a lovely view. Park near the church and visit the Tree of Liberty, planted in the 19th century. It's majestic, and right next to it is a lovely viewpoint. Take a moment to admire the landscape beneath its canopy of trees. Mugrón is easily explored on foot. You'll find plenty to pack for a picnic, and then head to the leisure center: a lake where you can swim and enjoy water slides with the kids. There's a refreshment bar in season and everything you need for a pleasant time with family or friends, at a very reasonable price! The banks of the Adour also offer lovely walks. Built on the old railway line that connected Saint-Sever to the spa town of Dax, the Chalosse Green Route offers a 34-kilometer stretch on smooth, hard-surfaced ground. The route offers a bucolic atmosphere with landscapes of woods, hills, and meadows. Among the main tourist attractions are the town center of Saint-Sever (whose abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Santiago de Compostela Route), the villages of Mugron and Montfort with its Chalosse Museum, and Montaut, a charming Chalosse village. The Landes-Chalosse destination will delight cyclists thanks to its green route and numerous hiking trails. Saint Bartholomew's Church The old church, built on the same site as the new one, was the castle chapel and previously the seigneurial chapel. The first stone was solemnly blessed on March 19, 1868. It was consecrated in 1869. The church plan is the work of Mr. Ozanne, the departmental architect. Mr. Fraglon, a public works contractor in Villandraut, won the contract for 80,000 francs. The total cost, including furniture and the architect's fees, reached 100,000 francs (€15,244). The church of Poyanne could be considered at the time one of the most impeccable new churches in the diocese: for its size, the height of its vaults, the boldness of the arcades, the harmonious proportions, the unity of style, the regularity of the whole, and the harmony of the details. The church is built in the shape of a parallelogram and without transepts. Its nave consists of a vestibule, a central nave, two side aisles, and a choir with a polygonal chevet flanked on the right and left by a small square chapel. It measures 35m long, 19m wide, and 13m high. The 10m deep choir receives light from the chevet through three long lancet windows. The main nave connects with its side aisles through five large arches that provide as many bays, supported by eight isolated pilasters. The vault rests on real capitals. The gallery is in perfect taste. The porch is very simple, displaying its decoration only at the main door. The patron saint of the church of Poyanne is Saint Bartholomew. The Bergouey region offers several dedicated traffic-free gravel bike trails, providing a safe and enjoyable experience away from cars. This guide features five distinct routes, ranging from moderate to difficult, allowing you to explore the diverse landscapes of the Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques departments.
The terrain around Bergouey is quite varied, sitting at the crossroads of the Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques departments. You'll find extensive forest tracks and generally flat sections to the north in Landes, while to the south, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques offers rolling hills and more challenging gradients. Many routes utilize rural paths and 'chemins' ideal for gravel bikes, often with well-maintained surfaces due to local quarrying activities.
While the routes listed in this guide are generally moderate to difficult, the broader region offers many rural paths and forest tracks that can be suitable for families. For a more relaxed experience, look for sections of the Voie verte de Chalosse, which is a dedicated greenway and often provides flatter, car-free sections perfect for family outings. Always check the route details for elevation and distance to ensure it matches your family's capabilities.
Many routes offer scenic viewpoints and historical sites. You can enjoy panoramic vistas from The Chalosse Viewpoint or The Montfort-en-Chalosse viewpoint. The Voie verte de Chalosse itself is a highlight, featuring the Voie Verte de Chalosse Railway Tunnel. Additionally, Bergouey is on a historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, so you might encounter heritage interpretation panels and sites like a Roman bridge.
Yes, several routes in this guide are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end in the same location. For example, the "Voie verte de Chalosse – The Chalosse Viewpoint loop from Bergouey" and the "Brassempouy Prehistoric Site – Horsarrieu Church loop from Bergouey" both offer convenient circular options starting directly from Bergouey.
The region around Bergouey is generally pleasant for gravel biking from spring through autumn. Spring brings blooming landscapes, while autumn offers beautiful colors and cooler temperatures. Even winter can be suitable, especially in the Landes department with its extensive forest tracks, though some higher elevation routes in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques might be more challenging due to weather. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.
Bergouey-Viellenave is a charming village with local amenities. You'll find opportunities for refreshments and accommodation in and around the village, as well as in other towns along the routes. The presence of 'aires de détente en bordure de rivière' (riverside relaxation areas) also suggests pleasant spots to rest. For specific options, it's advisable to check local listings in Bergouey and nearby towns like Montaut or Nerbis.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience around Bergouey, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Riders often praise the quiet, rural environment, the diverse landscapes ranging from forests to rolling hills, and the opportunity to explore historical sites and scenic viewpoints away from traffic. The blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes for a rewarding ride.
While many routes are traffic-free, the difficulty can vary. This guide includes routes rated as moderate and difficult, with some featuring significant elevation gains, such as the "Voie verte de Chalosse – The Chalosse Viewpoint loop from Bergouey" which has over 598m of ascent. Always check the route's elevation profile and distance to ensure it matches your fitness level. Some paths might also be unpaved or lightly paved, requiring a suitable gravel bike.
Given the rural nature of Bergouey and surrounding villages, you can typically find parking in the village centers or near trailheads. For routes starting directly from Bergouey, parking should be available within the village. For routes like the "The Chalosse Viewpoint – Voie verte de Chalosse loop from Nerbis" or the "Saint-Sever Church – Saint-Sever Abbey loop from Montaut", look for public parking in Nerbis or Montaut respectively. Always be mindful of local parking regulations.
Public transport options directly to Bergouey-Viellenave might be limited due to its rural location. While some larger towns in the region may have bus or train services, reaching the specific trailheads often requires a car. It's best to check regional transport schedules for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Landes departments if you plan to rely on public transport, keeping in mind that carrying a bike might also be a consideration.
