A Romanesque predecessor building is suspected on the site as early as the 11th century. The parish church received its present form in the course of Baroque remodeling under the architect Carlo Antonio Carlone. The Gothic elements of the three-aisled hall church, built around 1400, are only partially recognizable beneath the dominant Baroque forms. The most important works of art in the church are the 14 Stations of the Cross by Martin Johann Schmidt, known as Kremser Schmidt (around 1770). The altarpiece "Glory of St. Stephen" is by Andreas Rudroff, a student of Kremser Schmidt. Next to the entrance is the tombstone of Johann Schmidt, the father of Kremser Schmidt, an important sculptor. The Barbara Chapel is attached to the north of the parish church; it formerly served as a mortuary chapel for the cemetery surrounding the church building, which has since been abandoned. Also part of this cemetery was a round ossuary, the remains of which were investigated in 1980 during an archaeological excavation.
