The 36.36 meter high Obere Tor was built around the middle of the 13th century. It is documented as the first of all city gates, namely as "superior porta" on August 18, 1293 (Main State Archives Munich and Würzburg). On the fifth floor, a projecting bay window built of ashlar masonry with a saddle roof juts out on the outside on four strong corbels; the coat of arms of the Counts of Henneberg is located on the corbels. The addition of the sixth floor and the tower's conclusion with a stepped gable and segment-arched roofs date from 1570. The sixth floor contains the gatekeeper's dwelling. It is one of the highest city towers in Unterfranken.
