Beautiful legend about the cross 🙂

Location: In the passage of the Einersheim Gate, behind the northern gate wing in front of the northern wall. Legend: During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops entered the town through the Einersheim Gate in 1632. A councilman tried to plead for mercy for the town and its inhabitants, but was stabbed by a mercenary. The cross was erected on the spot where he died.

This is the Einersheim Gate in Iphofen. It is one of the four gates of the medieval city fortifications and is still very well preserved. Its solid construction is particularly impressive. Today, it's a great photo opportunity and a good starting point for a stroll through the old town.

The tower, with irregular ashlar masonry, rises above a square ground plan of 7.2 meters. The tower is approximately 23 meters high to the apex, with a 15-meter eave height. The tower is characterized by its slightly pointed arched passageway, the low half-timbered upper story, and its tent roof with a lantern. The tower facades are free-standing on three sides; only on the south side is a neighboring building directly adjacent to the tower facade. The half-timbered story was rebuilt in 1605/1606. A narrow staircase leads to the interior above the passageway, through which the main street runs. The ceiling levels consist of simply boarded wooden beams. The bell tower was designed for the Old Town Hall in 1695 and only relocated to the Upper Gate in the early 20th century. Only recently, Baroque figurative wall paintings depicting a man, a woman, and a young girl were partially uncovered on two half-timbered walls. These paintings are depicting a man, a woman, and a young girl. https://www.denkmalschutz.de/pressemeldung/der-torturm-in-scheinfeld-wird-dsd-foerderprojekt.html
