Great location in the Badlands. Small double rooms with shared bathrooms – built into the cave. They also offer a few meals, drinks, and breakfast. High-quality and reasonably priced. (See map)

Double-check the trails! The river valley was completely overgrown and almost impossible to get through. It's a real ordeal to find your way back out! Not all of the trails on Komoot actually exist, and not all of the real trails are marked. Bring enough water!

There are over 10 dedicated no-traffic gravel bike trails around Valle Del Zalabí featured in this guide. These routes offer a fantastic way to explore the region's unique landscapes away from vehicular traffic.
The terrain in Valle Del Zalabí is incredibly diverse, offering a true 'Spanish Badlands' aesthetic. You'll encounter a mix of rocky outcrops, clay hills, and fertile lowlands. Expect deserted backroads and some rougher sections, with visually stunning red ochre hillocks set against the Sierra Nevada mountains. The nearby Gorafe desert also provides an otherworldly riding experience with its unique geological formations.
Most of the no-traffic gravel trails in this guide are rated as difficult. They often feature significant elevation changes and can be quite challenging, making them suitable for experienced gravel bikers looking for a rewarding adventure. For example, the Gravel Snake loop from Guadix covers over 44 km with more than 500 meters of ascent.
Yes, all the featured no-traffic gravel routes in this guide are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end your ride at the same point. This makes planning your trip and logistics much simpler. Examples include the Gorafe loop from Hernán-Valle and the Gorafe Desert loop from Guadix.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You can explore the dramatic landscapes of the Granada Geopark, which many of these trails traverse. Keep an eye out for stunning vistas like the Badlands de Purullena Viewpoint and the Viewpoint of the Cárcavas de Marchal, offering panoramic views of the eroded badlands.
Absolutely. Valle Del Zalabí is close to the historic city of Guadix, famous for its unique cave dwellings. You can visit the Cave Museum – Cuevas de Guadix Interpretation Center to learn about this distinctive way of life. The villages forming Valle Del Zalabí also preserve Mudejar churches and medieval cisterns, offering glimpses into the region's rich history.
Due to the region's extreme climate, spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant seasons for gravel biking. These periods offer milder temperatures, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the cooler, sometimes humid conditions at higher elevations in winter. The changing colors of the landscape also add to the visual appeal during these times.
Many of the routes start from towns like Guadix or Hernán-Valle, where you can typically find public parking options. For example, the View of Hoya de Guadix loop begins near Guadix. It's advisable to check local parking regulations in Alcudia de Guadix, Exfiliana, or Charches if starting directly from those villages.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience in Valle Del Zalabí, with an average score of 4.35 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's stunning and unique 'Badlands' scenery, the quietness of the no-traffic routes, and the challenging yet rewarding terrain that offers a true sense of adventure and exploration.
While the majority of routes in this guide are rated as difficult, the region's extensive network of deserted backroads means that with careful planning, shorter and less challenging sections could be found. However, for dedicated family-friendly or beginner routes, it's recommended to consult local information or guides that specifically cater to easier terrain, as the listed tours are generally demanding.
While the trails themselves are designed to be traffic-free and often pass through remote areas, you will find cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options in the larger towns and villages that serve as starting points or pass-throughs for some routes. Guadix, Alcudia de Guadix, Exfiliana, and Charches are good places to look for amenities before or after your ride.
