A solitary place, with hardly any traffic and with a beautiful setting for riding a road bike

A small ruined village. It is currently uninhabited although it was of great importance since it had factories of coarse cloth, yarn and cloths that supplied Soto. It is located on a hill between the ravines of Santa María and Hayedo at a height of a thousand meters.

San Román is the ideal base for any activity in the Leza Valley. It is the largest town in Camero Viejo and the one with the most services. Although there is only one bar/restaurant, Montereal, it is always open and you can taste typical Rioja dishes. Its municipal term covers several towns and its paths are very well preserved. The houses around the church and the church itself are very well preserved. There are hardly any modern structures and a walk through its streets takes you back in time and to the traditional Rioja popular architecture.

Beautiful town in the Sierra Camerana. With stone houses and worth a walk. It has a couple of bars/restaurants at the foot of the road where you can recover your strength from the climb up there.

There are several dedicated no traffic touring cycling routes in the Hornillos De Cameros area, offering a range of challenging experiences through the mountainous landscapes of the Sierra de Cameros. Currently, you can explore 4 distinct routes designed for touring cyclists.
The routes primarily traverse the dramatic mountainous environment of the Sierra de Cameros. You'll encounter challenging ascents and descents, often on paved surfaces, winding through forests of oaks and beeches, and picturesque valleys. The region is known for its impressive panoramic views, especially from higher elevations.
The touring cycling routes listed for Hornillos De Cameros are generally rated as difficult due to significant elevation changes. While the region is beautiful, these specific routes may not be suitable for young children or beginner cyclists looking for very easy, flat terrain. For family-friendly options, you might look for dedicated greenways or less challenging sections of the broader 'Caminos de Cameros' network, which offers over 250 km of routes, some of which might be more accessible.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You can find breathtaking views of the Leza Canyon Viewpoint, a spectacular natural gorge. The area is also home to a significant vulture colony, offering unique wildlife viewing. While not directly on every route, the famous Puerto de la Rasa, a challenging mountain pass, offers expansive valley views and is a significant landmark in the cycling community.
Yes, all the touring cycling routes provided for this area are circular, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, you could try the challenging La Fragua Square – San Román de Cameros loop from San Román de Cameros, which covers approximately 37 km with over 1250 meters of elevation gain.
The Sierra de Cameros, including Hornillos De Cameros, is best enjoyed for cycling during the spring and autumn months. These seasons offer milder temperatures and vibrant natural scenery, with forests of oaks and beeches changing colors. Summers can be warm, especially at lower altitudes, while winters can bring snow and colder conditions to this mountainous region.
Beyond the natural beauty, the region offers unique historical natural features. You can find dinosaur footprints (ichnites) at sites like Pladortes Ichnite Site, showcasing some of La Rioja's longest tracks. The village of Hornillos de Cameros itself maintains traditional stone architecture, offering a glimpse into rural life.
The longest no traffic touring cycling route currently available is the San Román de Cameros – Descent With Valley Views loop from San Román de Cameros. This route spans approximately 42.8 km and includes over 850 meters of elevation gain, offering extensive valley views.
Hornillos de Cameros is a small, sparsely populated village. While specific public transport links directly to every route's starting point might be limited, the broader Sierra de Cameros region is accessible. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for connections to larger towns like Soto en Cameros or San Román de Cameros, which are closer to some route starts, and plan accordingly for the final leg of your journey.
Given the rural nature of Hornillos de Cameros and surrounding villages like San Román de Cameros, you can typically find parking in or near the village centers. However, dedicated large parking facilities specifically for cyclists at every route start might be limited. It's usually possible to find street parking or small public parking areas in these communities.
