Bell essential as lots of walkers and dogs. Go early to avoid the human traffic. Quite technical in places

Surprise View is a scenic viewpoint located above the town of Otley in Yorkshire. On a fine day you can more or less take a visual tour from York to Skipton and eye-feast the landscape in detail, including across the wonderful Yorkshire Dales.

Chevin Forest Park stands tall on a ridge on the southside of Wharfedale in West Yorkshire. Its elevated position provides fantastic views over the market town of Otley and expansive countryside surrounding ite. The Chevin is a wonderful place to explore history and geology, as it hosts a number of fascinating historical landmarks. It's also a haven for bird-watching, and features a diverse range of flora and fauna, including foot trefoil, yellow rattle, common knapweed and vetches, which in turn are great for the nationally rare bilberry bumblebee.

Beautiful views and sunsets.

Surprise View at 282m is probably named because most people approach from the south and "pop up" over the Chevin ridge to discover the view. And it's a good one - out over the local woods and moorland, across Otley to the north and over Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales. The viewpoint is close to the car park so it's often busy, but head along the ridge for a few minutes and you'll have similar views all to yourself. The running here is enjoyable but not too technical, with the best trails following the ridgeline and looping back on one of the lower paths. Cross the East Chevin Road into Chevin Forest Park to extend the run.

Chevin Forest country park is a designated nature reserve in recognition to the wealth of wildlife that live here. Look out for Green Hairstreak butterflies and Woodcock. There is a nice selection of trails, some open to mountain bikes and horses as well as walkers. Great views over Otley towards the dales.
