August 24, 2024, Upton Bridge

Until the 20th century, it was the only bridge across River Severn from Tewkesbury to Worcester. Now, it's a well-surfaced bridge with Severn Way going perpendicular to it.

This is the largest medieval church in Worcestershire and boasts some fine stained glass. The main part of the building is 15th century, although a previous church on this site was 7th century. There is a good 2 manual pipe organ which I couldn't date. It has a powerful pleasing sound. Ripple is a lovely village with friendly inhabitants.

A lovely highlight to ride past on this tour, set back, but there are gates and fences to look over.

The Bell Tower (which some refer to as the 'Pepperpot'), which dominates the main approach into Upton, is the oldest surviving building in the town and has great value as a local landmark.
