October 24, 2023, Hollow Wall Oast House

Right next to the road, at Hollow Wall Farm, you can see this twin round kiln oast house. These structures, recognizable mainly by their distinctive roofs, were used to dry fresh hops before sending them to brewers for use in flavoring beer.

Christopher Lloyd made this garden world famous through decades of work. After his death in 2006, Fergus Garrett took over the management and made innovations. Where Lloyd experimented with vegetables, an exotic garden with bananas is being created. Conifers, especially cedars, have been planted to provide shade. In May, native umbelliferous plants dominated the meadows and perennial plantings. It is incredibly aesthetic, I was delighted. Sustainability plays a major role in this garden.
