Zwierzyniec Gate

Highlight • Monument

It is the entrance gate to Zwierzyniec located in the Zwierzyniec Forest, belonging to the Tenczyn Castle - the last of the four - which has survived so far. It is located on the edge of the forest between the Eliza villa and the Tenczynek forester's lodge of the Krzeszowice Forest District, in Rzeczki - the easternmost part of Tenczynek, by the district road 2121K to the Niedźwiedzia Góra quarry and the former Krystyna Mine. It has a decorative character (currently without gate wings), on both sides of the road there are high brick towers (pillars) with falcons and greyhounds. The gate consists of six brick pillars. The two middle ones surrounded the main gate, they were crowned with sculptures depicting deer, while in their upper part they were decorated with animal heads. Above the main gate there was an openwork frame cast in cast iron, crowned with the coat of arms of the Potocki family from nearby Krzeszowice - its owners. There were smaller side gates between the symmetrical pairs of lower pillars. On the other hand, the side pillars connected with the main ones were topped with greyhound figures facing towards the deer figures.
In 2011–2012, the gate was renovated.

Ruins of Lipowiec Castle

Highlight • Castle

Lipowiec Castle is open to visitors again. Extensive security work has been completed. The ruins can now be safely viewed. However, some parts are not open to the public.

The high keep is accessible via a narrow stone spiral staircase. Two artillery loopholes have been restored in the keep and are now accessible on the way to the top viewing platform.

The last 3 meters must be climbed with the help of a permanently installed ladder. You are rewarded with a magnificent 360° view. A view that makes you want to hike in the surrounding forests.

The newly built, chic café does not detract from the ensemble at all. It blends well with the old ensemble. Admission costs 20 zloty (as of July 2025).

Kmita Rock

Highlight • Natural Monument

The name of the rock comes from the knight Kmita, who, according to a legend from the early 16th century, fell unhappily in love with the beautiful Olimpia Bonerowna, the daughter of the then owner of Balice. Unable to marry her, he threw himself and his horse off the rock in despair, dying on the spot. Bonerówna was supposedly given to a convent. There is a cross at the place where he jumped. An old inscription (renovated in 2016) carved on the rock a few meters above the road reads:

Who with heart will come here,
Having courage on that day,
That can also have joy;

And who with heart will come here,
Has sorrow on that day,
That can also have peace.

This is a fragment of a poem by Adam Gorczyński. There is another inscription on the rock:

With this animal's rhythm here fresh The painful heart of the lonely rock Stanisław Kmita, armed knight In battle with the Tatars, with a mighty sabre Towards Bonerów he turned his heart And from this rock here into the abyss he threw himself 1515.

The author of this sentence is Wincenty Pol. Both inscriptions were carved in 1854.

Our Lady of the Rock

Highlight • Religious Site

Mother of God of Skalska - a great painting of the Mother of God, painted in 1863 by Walery Eljasz-Radzikowski on a rock in the Mnikowska Valley in a place called "Circus".
There are several legends explaining the reasons which guided W. Eljasz-Radzikowski in painting this picture. According to one version, during the January Uprising several insurgents were surrounded by Russian soldiers chasing them. The Mother of God showed them behind the rock a cave in which they were hiding. Another story says that the initiator of the painting was Countess Potocka, who asked God for help for her seriously ill daughter. In her dream, a rock in the Mnikowska Valley with the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to her. After her daughter recovered, the countess asked Radzikowski to paint a picture there. Radzikowski was probably also motivated by the desire to create a place of prayer for the participants of the January Uprising who were hiding there. After the fall of the January Uprising, the invader forbade celebrating masses for the Homeland in Krakow's churches. Cracovians, under the pretext of recreational trips outside the city, participated in secret masses celebrated in front of the image of Our Lady of Skala.

Bukowica Nature Reserve — Bukowica Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

In the area of the town of Zagórze (Babice commune) there is the Bukowica nature reserve. It includes a picturesque hill, built of Triassic limestone, in the western part of Garb Tenczyński. The reserve is to protect a fragment of the Carpathian beech forest with old beech trees and the local landscape. Among others, the following grow in the undergrowth: Daphne mezereum, lily of the valley, sweet woodruff. The reserve's attraction is a several-meter-long outcrop - a rock wall made of Triassic limestone, in which numerous openings of small caves are visible. There is also a spring here. Local legends tell about the taste and health properties of the local water. According to one of them, a golden duck swims to the spring through an underground corridor from the castle in Lipowiec. King Jan III Sobieski and his army stopped here several hundred years ago on his way to Vienna. The braver ones tell stories about how the miraculous water from the Zagorze spring later contributed to the victory over the Turks.

Lipowiec Castle is a picturesque medieval castle ruin situated on a limestone hill within the Lipowiec Nature Reserve, near the villages of Wygiełzów and Babice, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. This Gothic fortress once protected the trade route from Kraków to Silesia. Fragments of the upper castle, including a well and a tower from the earliest period of construction, still survive today. In the 15th century, the fortress, owned by the Kraków bishops, also served as a prison for clergy, particularly during the Reformation. The fortress was destroyed by wars and fires and was finally abandoned in the early 19th century. In the 20th century, the building was opened to the public, and annual festivals were organized there to showcase the medieval era. In August, the Knights' and Archery Tournament takes place, offering visitors the opportunity to observe military performances, visit the craftsmen's village, and participate in numerous games and shows, all accompanied by the sounds of early music. Another August attraction is the Witches' and Witches' Rally.
