Sticklepath stores and cafe. You can sit outside with your bike and watch the world go by. Home made cakes were ridiculously cheap, too, and happy to top up water bottles 🙂

Sticklepath is a quintessential Dartmoor village that lies in the northern boundaries of the National Park. The village is home to Finch foundry, the last remaining water-powered forge in England, that once made fine tools for West Country farmers and miners.

Fascinating old water powered heavy tools for making spades and various farm equipment more of a forge than a foundry 🔥 National trust

A lovely little village. The walk from here back to Okehampton is primarily unpleasant walking along an A road, so I suggest ending the walk here (public transport is available either to Okehampton or to Exeter).

Check out the strangely worded plaque next to the war memorial.

North Tawton is a lovely village with a particularly pretty square. The town hall is a Grade II-listed building dating to the 19th century whilst a mullion windowed house with a gorgeous door dates back to the 16th. A clock tower sits in the middle and was built in 1887. The poet Ted Hughes once called this village his home after buying a house here in 1961 with Sylvia Plath. Hughes continued to live in the village until his death in 1998.

This quaint village is where the rebels regrouped for the final battle in the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion (Western Rebellion). The rebels rose up against the crown when it imposed the English language, undermining the existing local Cornish language. Rather more sedate these days, Sampford Courtenay is a wonderful little village with thatched cottages and buildings dating back hundreds of years.
