A personal project The tower was built in 1765 by Richard Hull from Leith Hill Place as 'a place for people to enjoy the glory of the English countryside'. Richard loved the tower so much he wanted to be buried underneath it.

Ockley sits on Stane Street, the Roman Road between London and Chichester. As you pedal through the village there are plenty of quaint old buildings to catch your eye and views up to Leith Hill and the tower, prominent in the clearing of trees. It is thought that a significant battle in Anglo Saxon / Viking history was fought here in 851 in which the Danes were defeated. The battle was fought at a place called Aclea and although it is not known exactly where this is, Aclea translates as Oak Lea which may in turn reference Ockley.
