Tips from the Community

Muddy madness
October 1, 2026, Terrace Hill

Fuel and hydrate as you ride down long lane on the approach and Don’t let the easy start lure you in, the hill actually starts before you enter the trees. Get your gearing and cadence set just as you enter the tree line, the first few metres are relatively sedate but as you round the first corner the gradient steps up a notch and the surface is slightly broken up making choosing the right line a little tricky; pace yourself as you’ll find the first section quickly drains your legs, as you approach the next bend the hill starts to ease but if you’ve pushed hard early you’ll now feel that burn really starting and the ripples in the surface don’t help; try to keep a steady cadence and as you approach a forestry crossing you’ll spot the summit some 25 - 50 metres ahead, if you’ve got your gearing and cadence right and strength in your legs you should be able to increase your speed and push to summit, as you exit the trees the road goes to the left; watch out for mountain bikes exiting the trees and dog walkers etc. There is a very short incline as you round the bend then freewheel and get your breath back as you approach the crossroads.

The Clock Tower, at it is now known, is a Grade II listed building and continues to serve the villages of Aubourn and Haddington as it is surrounded by the graveyard with the village war memorial, which is still being used. The church was part demolished in the 1970’s and the remaining standing structure was saved from total demolition by the weight of public opinion with local residents raising funds to retain the building within the parish. It is at the heart of the two villages and is widely recognised as a local landmark introducing a welcome verticality into an essentially flat landscape and offers an added local interest in there being a magnificent working clock dedicated to the community.

Aubourn Hall itself is a rare 17th century manor house and something of an ‘architectural riddle’ set in 12 acres of secluded gardens, in the heart of the village of Aubourn. Surrounded by the wider Aubourn Estate which is made up of approximately 2,500 acres of farmland and woodland. The estate had 500 years of continuous ownership by the Nevile family.

The church building of today is what remains of the ancient parish church that was partially demolished in 1862 when a ‘new’ church was built between Aubourn and Haddington. All that survives of the new church is the tower and apse. The ‘new’ church is the village heritage room and is no longer used for worship. The chancel of the old parish church is home to St. Peter’s today. It dates from about 1200AD with a significant rebuild in the 14th century.
