November 30, 2024, Oakington to Longstanton Bridleway

Tarmacked bridleway that provides a useful shortcut. Watch out for the piles of horseshit though.

Quiet stretch between Oakington and Longstanton

Fine for commuters and tourers but too narrow in places to ride at any speed as well as taking you in front of blind driveway entrances as you near Histon. Also gets covered with debris scattered by cars from the adjacent road, so greater puncture risk. Road cyclists are better off sticking to the road.

The village of Longstanton developed greatly alongside the opening of RAF Oakington in 1940, which caused great demand for housing. This caused Longstanton to triple in size. Today the RAF base is no more and a new town, Northstowe, is set to dominate much of the land it was built on.
