Walk The Walk 🌳
October 1, 2026, St Martin's Church, Stoney Middleton

A unique Grade II* listed Church of England parish church known for its rare octagonal nave. Originally founded in 1415 by Joan Eyre as a thanksgiving offering for the safe return of her husband, Sir Nicholas Eyre, from the Battle of Agincourt. It was built near the site of an earlier medieval well chapel dedicated to St. Martin. A destructive fire in 1757 burned down the main body of the old church, leaving only the medieval stone tower intact. The distinctive octagonal nave was built in 1759 by architect James Paine. The church underwent further restorations in 1861 (which included arranging the pews to face the center) and received a north vestry addition in 1880. The west tower retains its original 15th-century medieval architecture, contrasting with the 18th-century octagonal body.
