Sledmere House is a Georgian mansion which is open to the public whilst still being inhabited by its current owner, Sr Tatton Sykes (who apparently loves to wear cowboy boots, so keep an eye out for him). The Coach House Cafe and farm shop are before the paypoint for entering the house and gardens so can be enjoyed without having to pay for an admissions ticket. From high up at Settrington Beacon you can enjoy wide views both across the Vale of Pickering towards the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds. A beacon originally stood here in Roman times, lit to warn of a Viking invasion. It was one of a chain stretching from Scarborough and Filey Brigg all the way to York.

Leave the traffic behind at Fimber and head up Burdale Lane towards Thixendale. The hills are steep to each side of you but the road is very well tarmacked and easy going. Following the contours through the valleys is almost like being on a train track as it curves and meanders through the flattest route it can find. Amazing that this is the result of glacial melt water during the last ice age.
