Series of descending locks travelling towards Northampton (or ascending if you're going the other way towards Stoke Bruerne). Fairly wide in places so it's easy to build up a fair bit of speed downhill, but bear in mind it's a canal towpath so there will be walkers... ride sensibly, announce your presence and be ready to slow down for pedestriansπ

A nice view from the town of Gayton - worth a quick stop to take it in (or more likely take a photo).

Nice place to stop and re fue, some wire sculptures and picnic area.

In order to get from the canal to the footpath over the hill you have to cross the West Coast Main Line via the road bridge. There is no direct access to the bridge from the canal so you have to carry on to the next Canal bridge and follow the road round and over from there.

This is totally unexpected. The cutting is quite deep and the brick bridge over is impressive. It is a significant piece of engineering for, what appears to be a narrow track. The cutting is heavily wooded and, unfortunately, it is difficult to get a clear view of the structure. I climbed down to the bottom of the cutting but it is a difficult, steep scramble.

Great trail down to towpath, bit technical but great fun π

Beautiful bridge north of Gayton Junction, used by horse to cross the canal without releasing the tow rope on the canal boat
