Stop at No2 Pound Street (adjacent to the mini roundabout up the hill) Their main business is a delicatessen specialising in cheese and wine ... but you can grab a tea/cofffee with cake or a toastie, Sit outside or in depending on the weather! Highly recommended. If you've room in your saddlebag, grab a bottle of wine, with some excellent cheese, having taken note of the expert advice from the staff!

Pace yourself and keep something back for the near 15% gradient section. Gentle finish.

The walk starts out from Amersham town centre. Highly recommended for breakfast before starting the hike is Sycamore, my personal favourite place for breakfast in Amersham with a variety of food options and excellent coffee (make sure to try the Figgy Anzac cookies!). Other good options are Nena Craft Bakery and A Little Street Kitchen which are both nearby.

The Chiltern region offers over 115 dedicated road cycling routes that focus on minimizing traffic, providing a serene experience through its picturesque landscapes. These routes cater to various skill levels, with 56 easy, 54 moderate, and 5 difficult options.
The Chilterns, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is characterized by rolling chalk hills and a dramatic escarpment. You'll encounter varied terrain, from gentle ascents to short, steep climbs typical of the UK. Many routes wind through ancient beech woodlands and alongside clear chalk streams, offering a classic English countryside experience. While most routes are well-paved, some sections of the wider Chilterns Cycleway might include unpaved or rutted paths, so it's good to be aware of your specific route's surface.
Yes, there are plenty of easy options for beginners. For instance, the Temperance Hall, Chesham – A Little Street Kitchen loop from Chesham is an easy 38.7 km route with moderate elevation gain. Another great choice is the Penn Common Pond – Penn Village loop from Gerrards Cross, covering 29.7 km with manageable climbs.
Many routes offer scenic views and pass by interesting landmarks. You might cycle past the historic Old Amersham Town Centre, known for its architecture and independent shops. The tranquil Shardeloes Lake provides a beautiful setting, and the River Chess Stepping Stones and Weir are a charming natural feature. For panoramic views, Ivinghoe Beacon is a significant hilltop in the region, though you might need to detour slightly from some routes to reach it.
Absolutely. The Chilterns is known for its tough climbs. For a significant challenge, consider the Wending around Wendover - Chiltern Hills loop, a demanding 78.7 km route with over 1000 meters of elevation gain. The region also features notorious climbs like Whiteleaf, Wardrobes Lane, and Watlington Hill Road, with gradients reaching up to 23%.
The Chilterns are beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for road cycling with less traffic. The weather is milder, and the natural scenery, from blooming wildflowers to vibrant autumn foliage, is at its peak. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends on popular routes, further enhancing the 'no traffic' experience.
Yes, the Chilterns are dotted with charming villages and market towns that offer excellent amenities. Many routes pass through or near places like Old Amersham, Chesham, and Wendover, where you can find cafes, pubs, and shops. For example, the The Royal Standard pub loop - Chesham to Winchmore Hill specifically highlights a pub along its route, and The Royal Standard of England is a notable pub highlight in the area.
Many of the routes in Chiltern are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. The wider Chilterns Cycleway itself is a 170-mile circular route, predominantly on minor roads. Shorter examples include the Winchmore Hill – Marlow Suspension Bridge loop from Great Missenden, a moderate 65 km ride, and the Wending around Wendover - Chiltern Hills loop.
The Chilterns are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's stunning natural beauty, particularly the quiet, winding roads through ancient beech woodlands and the panoramic views from the chalk escarpment. The variety of routes, from gentle rides to challenging climbs, is also frequently highlighted as a major draw.
Several towns within the Chilterns, such as Chesham, Wendover, Tring, Berkhamsted, and Chorleywood, have good public transport links, including train stations. These towns can serve as convenient starting points for many of the no-traffic road cycling routes, allowing you to access the trails without needing a car.
Generally, no specific permits are required for road cycling on public roads and designated cycleways within the Chilterns. As long as you stick to public rights of way and respect private land, you should be fine. However, if you plan to cycle through specific private estates or nature reserves, it's always wise to check their individual access policies beforehand.
