Stepping stones currently closed off/ not able to cross the river here. There is temporary fencing installed which reads: No Access β€’ due to health and safety concerns regarding the condition of the stepping stones and banks…

Only clear path near Stew Ponds, rest is overgrown and boggy. Beautiful lakes though!

Owned by the City of London Corporation, Ashtead Common is part of a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), together with adjacent Epsom Common. In the 1870s access to countryside for Londoners was being threatened due to the expansion of the capital. The area was purchased to preserve it as an open space. You can spot the coal posts at the common's boundaries. Painted white with the City of London's crest near the top. They marked where tax would be payable to the City of London for coal imported into its boundaries.

This wonderful set of stepping stones spans the Hogsmill River and is well worth seeking out. They lie just north of Ewell and you can see them from the LOOP trail. Take care crossing, particularly after heavy rain as they can be slippery.

This peaceful nature reserve is own by Oxford University's Merton College, and is a lovely place for a stroll. Oak and beech have long lived here and if you come in May, you'll find carpets of bluebells. The earthworks within the wood are thought to be the remains of a medieval hunting lodge.
