The bridgehead of the Ronde van Vlaanderenbrug on the Trakelweg side is popular as a sports location. Almost daily, people exercising - with or without a personal coach - can be found here. Edward Houpline, sports coach and owner of EDE Sport and Movement, a frequent user of the location himself, submitted a proposal to give the bridgehead some color, using the urban project subsidy 'Paint your city'. For this, he collaborated with street artists LA.KUS (Koksijde) and KIEWIE.9000 (Gent). The artworks - realized in the spring of 2023 - are a nod to the Leie river and sporting activities. Between 1857 and 1860, the old Bossuit-Kortrijk canal was dug using spades and wheelbarrows, as well as horse and cart. After the construction of the new canal in the early 1970s, this old section of the canal remained in place. As a result, an ideal spawning ground was created here. Fish find few suitable opportunities to spawn and lay their eggs. They do this on aquatic and riparian plants, which are present in limited numbers in the canal. Species such as rudd and pike require plants to complete their reproduction. The creation of fish spawning grounds gives the fish population a "natural" boost. However, it is not only fish that benefit from this nature development zone. Dragonflies, amphibians, waterfowl, and breeding birds also find an ideal habitat there. Source: information board on site

The Kortrijk-Bossuit Canal was built between 1858 and 1860 to connect the Leie and Scheldt rivers, primarily to transport coal from the Borinage to Flanders.

Even without cobbles, a 17% gradient is definitely a serious challenge and requires good pacing and control. For riders looking to avoid the Koppenberg, this slope seems like a strong alternative with its own difficulty. It reminds me of learning something new like how to open xml file in alight motion tricky at first, but manageable once you understand the steps.

Red marble heart set on a bluestone base engraved with the words “the beating heart of Overleie carries people through life,” a line by local poet Achilles Surinx, to honor the charitable work of the theatre group De Spatjes, and the selected design was created by artist Luche (Lutje van Calberg), who draws inspiration from nature, human relationships, religion and politics. https://erfgoedinzicht.be/collecties/detail/f7e8d77e-5b58-548f-bd82-1d0098210224/media/9da1db95-5b5c-7b88-2172-059466adff87
