Tips from the Community

Dominique Henrioulle
August 14, 2026, Opprebais Quarry Lake

The exploitation of the Opprebais quarry began during the construction of the Namur-Louvain road around 1755, under the impetus of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria: quartzite was extracted there, a very hard stone mainly used for making paving stones but still present in its natural state in certain areas of the municipality. Some parts of the Opprebais castle-farm are built with quartzite rubble stones. Production stopped for the first time and, in 1935, the quarry was flooded. Activity resumed from 1958 to 1975. The lake, fed by groundwater, is surrounded by rock faces and vegetation. Owned by the Société Wallonne Des Eaux, the quarry is closed to the public: access to the water and swimming are prohibited: the site had to be fenced off to prevent any intrusion as the place is dangerous due to its depth (up to 30m), the water temperature (risk of thermal shock) and the presence of rocks. The place is also known to diving clubs. A path, enhanced by a fitness trail, allows you to walk around it.

De Ferme de la Tour (also known as Cense del Tour) is a historic, seventeenth-century castle farm in Glimes, a sub-municipality of Incourt in the province of Walloon Brabant. The farm is part of the village's local architectural heritage. The current buildings largely date from the 17th century, although the site has a history as a manor farm dating back to the late 11th century. A rectangular keep from the 12th/13th century has been preserved. It is a typical Brabant square farm, built in brick and limestone, which formerly served as the seat of a local lordship. Today, it is an active farm known for its production of artisanal ice cream, breeding of Friesian horses, and an extensive flower garden with a rose garden.

Beautiful, striking church in Beauvechain...

The cemetery surrounding the church is well worth a visit, both for its local history and the many old graves and headstones. Behind the last grave is the motte and bailey of Néthen, which, especially nowadays, seems simply a forest. Diagonally across from the front of the church is the castle of Zeebroeck. The family's burial chapel is built against the rear of the church (and is accessible).
