Certosa di Vedana, founded in 1457 on the remains of the ancient medieval hospice of San Marco di Vedana, is one of the most evocative monastic complexes in the Belluno Dolomites. Located at an altitude of 430 m at the entrance to the Val Cordevole, it overlooks the characteristic 'masiere' (expanses of gravel and boulders) at the foot of Piz di Vedana, in a setting of absolute quiet and isolation, perfect for Carthusian life. The complex, enlarged and partly rebuilt after 1882, features the typical structure of a Carthusian monastery: a large cloister with the monks' cells, austere and secluded environments, and a more monumental church dedicated to St. Mark. According to tradition, some architectural elements – such as the grand staircase – were designed by Palladio. For centuries it was a place of welcome for pilgrims along the "route of the hospices". After various historical events, it today hosts a community of cloistered nuns. The complex cannot be visited internally, but the exterior and the surrounding landscape offer an atmosphere of great spirituality and silence.
