If you are in these parts you cannot miss a trip to the Disueri dam. Once on the pier, look at the joints between the concrete blocks, from which iron rods protrude.

The Archaeological Area of Sophiana, near Mazarin, reveals a Roman settlement active from the proto-imperial period until the 3rd century AD. The site, excavated between 1986 and 1990, showed a well-developed urban structure, with a spa complex, noble domus and various residential and commercial structures. It was a probable center of productive and commercial activities and a rest stop along the Catania-Agrigento road.

Rich in history, it probably dates back to the ancient Hibla Heraia, passing through various names up to its current name, probably deriving from Francesco Barresi in the 13th century. For those wishing to visit it; unfortunately I often see the gate closed, better call some information office. Or secondary entrance (piece of network missing) next to the gate open 24h / 24 😉

'U Cannuni is the castle of Mazzarino (real name not known); Military fortress of Norman origin, built around the 9th-10th century, retains a single surviving cylindrical tower and some walls. The large windows that illuminated the rooms, the fireplaces dug into the thick masonry and some rooms of the tower are still visible. It was first a military fortress, to be later transformed into the residence of the lords of the city. It was gradually abandoned as early as 1500, due to landslides that affected the area, and for the construction of the new palace of the princes of Butera, in the center of the current town.
