Of the ancient fortress, the towers, part of the curtain walls and some ruined buildings remain intact, having suffered numerous assaults over the centuries. The last one was by French troops in August 1703, during the War of the Spanish Succession. Inside Arco Castle, thanks to a recent restoration, you can visit the Prigione del Sasso (Stone Prison) and the Torre Grande (Great Tower), whose walls are decorated with a splendid cycle of 14th-century secular frescoes depicting ladies playing chess.
