The Malga Lessinia is a historic mountain hut in the Lessinia Natural Park (Veneto region) at an altitude of 1,616 meters. The building is located near Erbezzo in the province of Verona and today serves as a popular refuge and gastronomic establishment for hikers and mountain bikers. The stone building was erected in 1915 during the First World War as a barracks for Italian border soldiers (Finanzieri). The border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire ran only a few hundred meters away at that time. From 1945 onwards, the complex was used as a mountain pasture for livestock grazing and cheese production. Since the 2000s, the hut has combined traditional dairy farming with a traditional snack bar and restaurant.

Alpine hut in a beautiful location. Too bad you can no longer buy fresh cheeses. The alpine hut gnocchi are excellent.

We follow a stretch of the Adige, the second longest river in Italy. Shortly before Verona, the waters wind their way through the steep rock faces.

The terrain around Fumane is quite varied. You'll encounter picturesque terraced vineyards and olive groves in the Valpolicella hills, as well as more challenging, rugged sections as you ascend into the Lessini Mountains. Many routes predominantly follow dirt roads, offering an authentic off-road experience. Be prepared for unpaved segments that may require good fitness.
Yes, many of the no traffic gravel routes in Fumane are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same location. For example, the Villa Mosconi Bertani – Valpolicella Vineyards loop from Negrar di Valpolicella offers a scenic circular ride through the heart of the wine region.
You'll find stunning natural beauty. Many trails offer panoramic views, especially from higher elevations like Monte Pastello, which provides vistas across the Valdadige, Monte Baldo, and Lake Garda. You can also discover the charming Molina Waterfalls within the Regional Natural Park of Lessinia, or the dramatic Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona perched on a rock spur.
Absolutely. Fumane is rich in history and culture. You might pass by ancient Rosso Ammonitico quarries, or the internationally significant Grotta di Fumane, an archaeological site. The region is also famous for its wineries, offering opportunities for tours and tastings of renowned Amarone wine. Historic villages like Molina, with its ancient stone courtyards, are also worth exploring.
Spring and autumn are generally considered the best times for gravel biking in Fumane. The weather is milder, and the landscapes are particularly vibrant with blooming vineyards or rich autumnal colors. Summer can be hot, especially in the valleys, while winter might bring colder temperatures and potentially snow in the higher Lessini Mountains, making some trails less accessible.
While many routes in Fumane involve significant elevation and can be challenging, there are options that are more suitable for families looking for less traffic. Look for routes that stick to the lower Valpolicella hills rather than the steeper Lessini Mountains. Always check the route details for distance and elevation to ensure it matches your family's capabilities.
Generally, dogs are welcome on most public trails in the Fumane area, especially on gravel roads and paths. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, particularly in areas with wildlife or near private property and vineyards. Ensure you carry enough water for both yourself and your dog, as water sources might be limited on some routes.
Parking is typically available in and around the main villages of Fumane and nearby towns like Negrar di Valpolicella or Erbezzo, which serve as common starting points for many gravel routes. Look for designated public parking areas. For instance, if you plan to ride the Passo Fittanze della Sega – Malga Lessinia loop from Erbezzo, parking would be available in Erbezzo.
Yes, as Fumane is part of the renowned Valpolicella wine region, you'll find numerous wineries, trattorias, and cafes in the villages along and near the gravel trails. These offer excellent opportunities to refuel with local cuisine and, of course, sample the region's famous wines. Molina village, for example, is known for its charming atmosphere and local eateries.
