I had my head torch which only just let me see through the pitch blackness. I wouldn't want to come through here late at night as it's very creepy.

What are some easy, short walks ideal for families with young children?

For a pleasant and easy stroll, consider the River Tweed Bridge – Manor Bridge loop from Neidpath Tunnel. This 6.6 km (4.1 miles) route offers gentle terrain along the river. Another great option is the River Tweed Bridge – Manor Bridge loop from Barns Tower, which is just over 6 km (3.7 miles) and also features minimal elevation gain.

Are there any circular family walks in Upper Tweeddale?

Yes, many of the family-friendly routes in Upper Tweeddale are circular, allowing you to start and end at the same point. For example, the Stanhope Burn loop offers a longer, moderate circular option, while shorter riverside loops like those near Manor Bridge are also circular.

What kind of natural or historical landmarks can we see on these trails?

Upper Tweeddale is rich in both natural beauty and historical sites. Many trails follow the scenic River Tweed, which is a Special Area of Conservation. You can also encounter historic structures like Manor Bridge and the unique Neidpath Tunnel. The region is also home to ancient hill forts like Dreva Craig and historic castles such as Neidpath Castle, which can often be viewed from riverside paths.

Are there any trails with good viewpoints for families?

While many family-friendly routes stick to the valleys, the region's rounded hills offer expansive views. For those able to tackle a moderate route, the Manor Bridge – View of Neidpath Castle loop from Neidpath Tunnel provides lovely vistas of Neidpath Castle and the surrounding Tweeddale landscape. More challenging hill walks in the Tweedsmuir Hills, though perhaps less 'family-friendly' for very young children, offer panoramic views across the Southern Uplands.

What is the best time of year to go hiking with family in Upper Tweeddale?

Upper Tweeddale is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for family hikes. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and fresh greenery, while autumn offers stunning foliage. Summer is also great, but trails can be busier. Winter walks are possible, especially on lower-level routes, but require appropriate gear for potentially colder and wetter conditions.

Are there any pushchair-friendly trails in the area?

While many trails in Upper Tweeddale involve natural surfaces, some riverside paths may be suitable for robust pushchairs, especially those designed for off-road use. We recommend checking the specific trail conditions and descriptions on komoot for the most up-to-date information on surface type and accessibility before you go.

Are there options for parking near family hiking trails?

Yes, many trailheads in Upper Tweeddale, especially those for popular routes, offer designated parking areas. For example, routes starting near Neidpath Tunnel or Barns Tower often have convenient parking nearby. It's always a good idea to check the starting point details of your chosen route on komoot for specific parking information.

Can we find cafes or places for refreshments along or near the trails?

While many trails wind through natural landscapes, the towns and villages within Upper Tweeddale, such as Peebles and Broughton, offer cafes, shops, and other amenities where you can find refreshments before or after your hike. Some longer routes might pass through or near these settlements, providing opportunities for a break.

Are there any less crowded family-friendly walks available?

To find less crowded options, consider exploring some of the slightly longer or less central routes, or visit during off-peak times (weekdays, or outside of school holidays). The region has many trails, so it's often possible to find quieter spots away from the most popular riverside loops. The hills, such as the quieter southern end of the Pentland Hills, also offer more solitude for families comfortable with a bit more ascent.
