I had my head torch which only just let me see through the pitch blackness. I wouldn't want to come through here late at night as it's very creepy.

For a pleasant and easy stroll, consider the River Tweed Bridge – Manor Bridge loop from Neidpath Tunnel. This 6.6 km (4.1 miles) route offers gentle terrain along the river. Another great option is the River Tweed Bridge – Manor Bridge loop from Barns Tower, which is just over 6 km (3.7 miles) and also features minimal elevation gain.

Upper Tweeddale is rich in both natural beauty and historical sites. Many trails follow the scenic River Tweed, which is a Special Area of Conservation. You can also encounter historic structures like Manor Bridge and the unique Neidpath Tunnel. The region is also home to ancient hill forts like Dreva Craig and historic castles such as Neidpath Castle, which can often be viewed from riverside paths.
While many family-friendly routes stick to the valleys, the region's rounded hills offer expansive views. For those able to tackle a moderate route, the Manor Bridge – View of Neidpath Castle loop from Neidpath Tunnel provides lovely vistas of Neidpath Castle and the surrounding Tweeddale landscape. More challenging hill walks in the Tweedsmuir Hills, though perhaps less 'family-friendly' for very young children, offer panoramic views across the Southern Uplands.
Upper Tweeddale is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for family hikes. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and fresh greenery, while autumn offers stunning foliage. Summer is also great, but trails can be busier. Winter walks are possible, especially on lower-level routes, but require appropriate gear for potentially colder and wetter conditions.

Some longer routes might pass through or near these settlements, providing opportunities for a break.
To find less crowded options, consider exploring some of the slightly longer or less central routes, or visit during off-peak times (weekdays, or outside of school holidays). The region has many trails, so it's often possible to find quieter spots away from the most popular riverside loops. The hills, such as the quieter southern end of the Pentland Hills, also offer more solitude for families comfortable with a bit more ascent.
