The Parterre du Midi is a beautiful flowerbed consisting of two circular pools located in the park of the Palace of Versailles. It is reached by a staircase and is home to two of the oldest sculptures in the park: the Children with Sphinxes, which have been in place since 1685. These children, also known as the 'Loves', were cast in 1668 by Amboise Duval after a model by Jacques Sarazin and placed on marble sphinxes by Louis Lerambert and Jacques Houzeau. The southern parterre, overlooking the Orangerie, was originally laid out in 1663 by Louis Le Vau. At that time, it consisted of sand-covered areas in front of which intertwined boxwood hedges, pyramid-shaped yews, and grass arabesques were displayed. Its size doubled, reaching its current dimensions, during the construction of the South Wing and the Orangerie by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1682.

The gardens of the Palace of Versailles (French: Jardins de Versailles) are among the most famous and impressive gardens in the world. The park was laid out in the 17th century under King Louis XIV, who made Versailles the center of royal power. The renowned landscape architect André Le Nôtre was responsible for the design of the gardens from 1661 onwards.

The Dragon's Basin is located in the northeastern part of the park, at the intersection of Avenue de Trianon and Allée d'Eau, and lies on the axis between the château and the Neptune's Basin. The fountain illustrates the ancient legend of Apollo and the dragon Python. According to myth, Juno sent the dragon to pursue Latona, the pregnant mother of Apollo and Artemis. Apollo killed the dragon with arrows to protect his mother. The Dragon's Basin depicts the dying dragon, with a powerful jet of water gushing from its mouth, symbolically representing its blood. This central jet reaches a height of 27 meters, making it the highest in the château park.
