Horst
May 20, 2026, Franciscus van Assisikerk Reijmerstok

The Church of Francis of Assisi is a church building in Reijmerstok in the Dutch South Limburg municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. It is located on the main street through the village. The church was built in 1922 with elements of expressionism to the design of architect Jos Wielders from Sittard. The building is constructed in brick in two shades and is placed transversely to the road with a rectangular floor plan with rounded corners. It is covered with a gable roof with slate. On the street side, at the head end of the church, is the tower with an entrance. Between the street and the church is an access staircase to reach the higher located church. The church building has a gable tower. The old church of Reijmerstok from 1838 was built in marlstone and was also dedicated to Francis of Assisi. It is now located to the left of the current church and has been converted. It is a neoclassical hall church that was built when the parish separated from that of Gulpen. After the new church was put into use in 1922, the old church was converted into a party hall and a residential house. The current church building is a national monument and is dedicated to Francis of Assisi. Since December 2025, the parish has formed a parish federation together with Banholt, Bemelen, Cadier en Keer, Margraten, Mheer, Noorbeek, Scheulder, and Sint Geertruid under the name Carlo Acutis. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franciscus_van_Assisikerk_(Reijmerstok)

Nice little town center for a short break

Along this stretch, you'll find a typical, beautiful landscape for the region: a stream winding its way through meadows and valleys. The Eyserbeek rises near Bocholtz and flows past Simpelfeld and the village of Eys, which is named after it. Near Gülpen, it empties into the Geul.

The Gulp River flows peacefully through the heart of Gulpen, giving the town center a charming and atmospheric feel. Along the banks, you'll see historic buildings, bridges, and greenery, making it the perfect spot to pause and enjoy the blend of nature and the city.

From this vantage point, you have a magnificent panorama of Gulpen and the surrounding hilly landscape. The meandering Geul River, green meadows, and rolling hills together create a typical Limburg backdrop.

Along the banks of the Gulp River, you'll discover a charming little waterfall. The water flows peacefully over a rock or weir, with shrubs growing nearby. The sound of flowing water adds a refreshing touch to the walk. It's especially crisper after rain due to the increased volume of water. In summer, the play of light on the water is a beautiful sight.
