A geological peculiarity emerges at the surface on the Stimberg – the Stimberg quartzite. Through the cementing of individual sand grains (the Haltern sands) under the influence of silicic acid, very firm and resistant quartzite rocks were formed. On the Stimberg, iron compounds were additionally involved in this process, which favored the formation of the particularly rare and hard Schwartensandstein. The Stimberg quartzite also shows the phenomenon of desert varnish on the sun-facing side. The rock absorbs water due to its porosity, which evaporates when exposed to sunlight. Through evaporation, the previously dissolved iron compounds remain on the rock surface as a dark coating. This geological peculiarity is otherwise only known from sandstones in desert regions. https://www.natuerlich-stimberg.de/erlebnisse/natur-und-artenschutz/quarzit

One wonders why a (visual) access to the lake, perhaps a few hundred meters long, cannot be integrated into such a hiking trail.
