Named after the Schweinfurt teacher and local historian Hubert Gutermann (1892–1974), the promenade, with its enclosed green area, runs along the northern bank of the Main River below the old town. Numerous monuments of industrial and technological history can also be found along the promenade. A historic hand-operated crane from 1852 was once used to load and unload ships. It has stood in its current location since 1962 and serves as an eye-catcher at the "Meedämpferles" boat landing. A few hundred meters further along Gutermannpromenade-4, Gabriel Horst's Walzenwehr monument awaits walkers.

About 100 meters northwest of it, in the main branch of the Main, a large roller weir with a 35-meter-long roller was built in 1903 and remained in operation until 1963. It is considered the first roller weir in the world, as the 1902 weir is considered only a prototype.
