Following the landscape designs of Peter Joseph Lenné in the 19th century, the garden was divided after the end of the war in 1945: the considerably smaller part, enclosed by a wall, served as the official residence of Wilhelm Pieck, the first president of the GDR, and was redesigned into a high-quality garden of modernity. The garden architect Reinhold Lingner was commissioned to plan a representative garden for receptions and social gatherings within the wall. The Gesellschaftsterrasse (social terrace) emerged as a media-effective presidential spot, as well as a teahouse, fountain, and small garden rooms for private conversations. Elaborate alternating flower decorations with spring and summer plantings, the perennial beds, and the summer planting in flower pots by Hedwig Bollhagen were an expression of the joy in lush perennial and flower arrangements of that time. https://www.spsg.de/schloesser-gaerten/objekt/schlossgarten-schoenhausen
