A popular stopping place. We were here with a camper, a motorcycle and a bicycle. The road is flanked by a rock wall.

The ruins of Kilcatherine church stand in a quiet, open spot above Coulagh Bay and are one of the oldest Christian sites on the Beara. Low walls, weathered gravestones and a walled graveyard give the place a subdued, timeless atmosphere, overlooking the bay and the distant Kerry mountains.

Built in 1899, Lonehort Battery was the largest of seven gun installations built on Bere Island by the British Admiralty. The battery protected the fleet when stationed in the sheltered Berehaven Harbour. As well as the guns, the site also comprised barracks, ammunition stores and watchtowers.

On the Wild Atlantic Way, Kilcatherine Church is now in ruins but still commands outstanding views over Ballycrovane Harbour. You can lose a good chunk of time exploring the graveyard. The stone cross is supposedly one of the oldest in the country.
