If you long for peace and nature, you should take a detour to the "Mansholter Büsche". The forest area covers 330 hectares and is a historically old oak and hornbeam forest with outstanding importance for nature conservation. The geest carries valuable forest communities. The location is on nutrient-rich, waterlogged "Lauenburger Ton". The natural diversity is based on interspersed drift sands as well as moor and floodplain formation, which lead to mosaic-like site conditions. The forest (220 ha) is managed close to nature and sustainably, with the aim of achieving biodiversity, uneven age and gradation. The aim of this management is an ecologically stable forest. The forest is ideal for walks, Nordic walking and hiking in nature.

The Bruns Nursery's Rhododendron Park is located in the Gristede Forest on the road from Wiefelstede to Bad Zwischenahn. Chinese sequoias provide shade, while other specimen trees create interesting focal points amidst the magnificent rhododendrons. Over 1,000 different rhododendron varieties and hardy azaleas form the core of the collection. It is particularly worth seeing between May and June, when the park transforms into a colorful floral landscape. Two ponds and an impressive park pavilion complete the picture. The 25-hectare grounds also serve as a show garden for the Gristede New Products®, as special emphasis is placed on rhododendron breeding. More than 150 varieties have already been developed here. With its numerous seating areas and restrooms, the park is ideal for a break during a bicycle tour or for a day trip.

History The castle complex, likely founded as early as the 9th century, was destroyed and rebuilt in the 12th century and belonged to Count Egilmar I, first mentioned in 1091, an ancestor of the House of Oldenburg. Around 1130/40, Count Egilmar II gave his daughter in marriage to the nobleman Friedrich von Anvorde in Elmendorf, who, according to tradition, disappeared on a crusade. In 1134, Elmendorf Castle is explicitly mentioned for the first time as the residence of Friedrich von Anforde. Later, the Lords of Elmendorff resided at the castle as ministeriales (unfree knights). A Diederich von Elmendorpe is mentioned as a witness in a document of Rastede Abbey in 1287. In 1331, the castle and its associated manor passed into the possession of the Counts of Oldenburg in exchange for properties along the Hase River. Contrary to the earlier assumption that the three hills were burial mounds of early burial mounds, excavations by the archaeologist Dieter Zoller in 1966 revealed...

The Zwischenahner Meer itself is a large body of water, and while direct swimming access for dogs might be restricted in certain areas (e.g., designated swimming beaches), many trails run alongside the lake, offering opportunities for dogs to cool their paws or drink from the shore in appropriate spots. Always be mindful of local regulations and other water users.
