The Hospital Church in Neustadt in Holstein dates back to a medieval foundation that originally served as a "hospital" – from the Latin hospitale = hostel, guesthouse, or pilgrim's house – and offered accommodation and care to the poor, the sick, and travelers. The name thus indicates its dual function as a religious site and social institution.

A very beautiful fieldstone church. Outside and inside!

Neustadt is located on what was once a very important pilgrimage route to Cismar Monastery. Therefore, many pilgrims chose Neustadt as a resting point and mostly slept outside the city gates. For this reason, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit was built in 1408. It was intended to provide cheap accommodation and medical care for those in need. Even today, the site is used for social purposes, with cheap housing being made available here. The site can be explored freely (including the inhabited areas). At the very back there is a museum apartment with limited opening hours. The hospital church is also unfortunately closed.

a really old brick church. It was built in the 12th century from field stones based on designs by Vicilin. Beautiful - inside and out. Simple and not pretentious. I particularly liked the small apse and the angel in it.

Quite curvy and not always easy to see due to some crests. It is advisable to ensure good lighting when visibility is poor.

We drove the route because of the highlight. A mistake, because you really end up on a sandy path that can be used with a racing bike at the beginning, but then comes up with the worst potholes!
