St. Mary’s Church of Lappee is a unique natural and cultural site of the Saimaa Geopark, located in central Lappeenranta. The sculptor Markku Hirvelä from Kotka created the statue based on the song by the artist Tatu Pekkarinen and the story of the 1950 film “Kaunis Veera eli Ballaadi Saimaalta” by Ville Salminen. The sculpture was commissioned by Lappeenranta businessman Ossi Vilhu, and the city accepted the donation at an unveiling event on August 7, 2020, at the story’s birthplace on the shore of Saimaa in the Linden Alley leading to the Lappeenranta harbour. The beautiful Veera is a life-size statue and is made using the traditional bronze casting method. The statue stands over a copper basin of water, on a hand made of acid-resistant steel. The hand has copper-coloured lily pads, from which water flows into the basin. The stone base of the sculpture is made of brown Upland granite, and the edge of the water basin is made of green Upland granite. The story of the film Beautiful Veera or Ballad from Saimaa The film locations are Saimaa, Lappeenranta, the Saimaa Canal and Pietari, and of course the tar steamer Prinsessa Armada itself. In addition to songs, the film has plenty of humour and romance, and is set in the early 20th century. The main role is played by the little daughter of a gypsy couple, whom they name Veera. When a gypsy couple later wants to marry their beautiful daughter Veera against her will in the hope of a dowry, the girl runs away and washes up as a coffee maid and servant on the tar steamer “Prinsessa Armada”. In St. Petersburg, refugees board the ship: a Finnish lieutenant fleeing the Cossacks, a Russian noblewoman, and an elderly man who, after seeing Veera’s locket, claims the girl is his own daughter, stolen by gypsies. Full of romance, humour and music, the film shines like a beautiful Finnish summer day. Kaunis Veera, based on the song play by Tatu Pekkarinen, will always keep its place in the hearts of Finns. The beautiful Veera is now in its own place in the harbour’s Rantapuisto, where it enchants with its presence.
