The church is located high on a hill in the middle of the village of Store Andst. It is a large granite ashlar building, probably dating from the last decades of the 12th century. A porch was added in the late Middle Ages, and the tower with its distinctive onion-shaped dome was built in 1592. At that time, it was a stilt tower with openings in the basement. These were bricked up sometime in the 16th or 17th century, but traces of the brickwork can still be seen on the north side of the tower. Many features of the early building point to Ribe Cathedral as its model. Source: Wikipedia

At this spot is the memorial stone commemorating King Christian's ride. The former border runs just a few meters further north, permanently visible across the street. Inscription: HERE WELCOME SOUTHERN JULY KING CHRISTIAN THE X WELCOME TO REUNIFICATION JULY 10, 1920 "...the reunification of South Jutland with the Fatherland, in remembrance of the solemn moment on that beautiful summer morning when King Christian rode across the border that is now no longer a border..."
