The lock gate in Termunterzijl (Netherlands) separates the inner harbor from the outer Ems/Dollart. The historic gates from 1725, known as "Boog van Ziel", are protected as a monument. Directly in front of them is a more modern storm surge barrier, which protects the region during high tides.

The B.L. Tijdenskanaal was part of the canalization plan for Westerwolde. This plan was drawn up by hydraulic engineer A.J.H. Bauer on behalf of the Association for the Promotion of Canalization of Westerwolde in 1893. An important initiator for this association was Boelo Luitjen Tijdens, a gentleman farmer in Nieuw Beerta and Member of Parliament. In the early 20th century, Westerwolde suffered greatly from waterlogging. This was the result of the reclamation and peat extraction of the Bourtangermoeras. This swamp originally tempered the fluctuations in water levels in the Ruiten-Aa and Mussel-Aa streams due to the absorbent effect of the peat. Because it had been largely dug away, they had a very irregular flow rate. Boelo Tijdens strove for the construction of canals in Westerwolde and eastern Oldambt, which would allow excess water to be quickly discharged and Westerwolde to become accessible for shipping. In 1905, the execution of the plan began, and in 1911, the B.L. Tijdenskanaal was constructed. The canal had one lock: the Vriescheloostersluis. A monument was erected at this lock for Boelo Tijdens. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.L._Tijdenskanaal
