The Mataró refuge, Gerber refuge or Gerber metallic refuge, is located next to La Isla lake, in the Gerber valley, at 2,460 meters of altitude. From the refuge we have magnificent views over the Gerber valley, the lakes we passed on the way up (Estanyola de Gerber, Estany Gerber, Estany Llong, Estany L´Illa) and the peaks that surround us Pic de Saboredo, Pic d´ Medias or Pico de Bassiero).

There are several bus-accessible hiking trails around Estany d'Airoto. This guide features 5 routes that start conveniently from bus stops, offering a range of experiences in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park.
The terrain varies, transitioning from fresh hazelnut forests at lower elevations to rugged slopes and high-mountain pastures closer to the peaks. You'll encounter diverse ecosystems, including meadows of 'gespets' and 'prats de sudorn,' rhododendron thickets, and black pine forests. Some routes, like the more challenging ones towards Estany d'Airoto itself, involve significant elevation changes.
Yes, there are options suitable for families. For an easier experience, consider the Hiking loop from Naut Aran, which is rated as easy. This allows for a pleasant outing without extensive physical demands, perfect for those with children or looking for a more relaxed pace.
Absolutely. Many of the bus-accessible routes are circular, allowing you to return to your starting point without needing to retrace your steps. Examples include the Pudo Lake loop from Port de la Bonaigua and the Arreu – Sant Martí Church of Borén loop from Sorpe, both offering moderate challenges and scenic views.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You can expect to see pristine mountain lakes, including the magnificent Estany d'Airoto itself, surrounded by impressive peaks like Tuc de Bonabé and Pico de Qüenca. The Airoto valley is known for its wild and unaltered character. You might also encounter diverse vegetation, from forests to high-mountain meadows, and observe the unique hydrography with interconnected lakes.
The best time to hike is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when trails are clear of snow and bus services are more frequent. Summer offers lush landscapes and accessible high-altitude routes. Always check local weather conditions and bus schedules before you go, as mountain weather can change rapidly.
Many trails in the Alt Pirineu Natural Park are dog-friendly, provided dogs are kept on a leash to protect wildlife and livestock. Always check specific trail regulations before heading out. The diverse landscapes offer plenty of opportunities for you and your canine companion to explore, but be mindful of the wild nature of the park, which is also home to brown bears.
Even for bus-accessible routes, it's essential to be prepared for mountain conditions. Bring appropriate hiking footwear, layers of clothing for changing weather, rain gear, sufficient water and snacks, a map or GPS device, and sun protection. Given the wild nature of some areas, a first-aid kit is also advisable.
While Estany d'Airoto is a popular destination, some routes can offer more solitude. The 'Lago Airoto from Isil' trail, though physically demanding, is noted for providing a sense of peace and quiet due to its significant elevation changes. Generally, routes that are longer or have higher elevation gains tend to be less frequented.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning natural beauty of the high-mountain lake, the dramatic peaks, and the sense of tranquility and seclusion found on many trails. The convenience of accessing such pristine nature via public transport is also a frequently highlighted benefit.
Yes, there are several moderate options for those seeking a bit more challenge.
