In Chojnice, the gates represented an essential element of the city's defenses. In front of each gate was a drawbridge, defended on the other side by bridgehead towers. In the case of the Człuchów Gate, these were called "Elephant" and "Bull." The six-story Człuchów Gate was built on a square plan in the Pomeranian Gothic style. The ground floor is the entrance area, which also includes a door that probably led to the rooms containing the mechanism for raising the portcullis and the bridge.
