The Basilica of St. John the Baptist is one of Szczecin's striking neo-Gothic churches. Built between 1888 and 1890, it was the city's only Catholic place of worship until 1945 and played an important role for the Polish minority. After the bombing in 1944, it was largely destroyed and reconstructed in the post-war period. Today, the church presents itself as a quiet, bright space with clean lines – a pleasant contrast to the urban environment.

The project was realized in 1980. The figure looks majestic and measures 405 cm together with the pedestal. In its hands, it holds a steering wheel, and the collar of its outer garment seems to flutter in the wind. The figure is not associated with any particular event, but it reminds residents, as well as visiting tourists, that Szczecin is a city associated with the sea and sailing.
