In the 14th century, Barlinek had a fortification system surrounding the city with a seven-meter high wall, 1,800 meters long. The fortifications included moats, lookouts, towers and gates, as well as two gates located opposite: Młyńska (the remains of which is a tenement house with a bay window turret, located at 7 Niepodległości Street) and Myśliborska (no structures have survived to this day). In the 19th century, most of the fortification system was demolished, and the remaining part was significantly damaged during World War II. The fragments that survived - 400 meters long - are located mostly at the intersection of Górna and Chmielna streets - where you can see the surviving spectacular details of the wall crown, the remains of the lookout room and the Dog Furta. Further remains of the fortifications can also be seen at Jeziorna Street. They give an idea of the power of the medieval fortifications that protected the city at a time when it was a border defensive stronghold.
