The Kokermühle in Walbeck As an architectural gem of rare historical and technical quality, the Walbeck Kokermühle presents itself. The facility finds its etymological origin in the Dutch term "Koker" (quiver), which simultaneously defines its constructive specification. Inside rests the so-called "mill king" – that massive wooden shaft, which as a central transmission link artfully transfers the kinetic energy of the blade axis to the grinding mechanism. As a solitary testament to this specific milling technology in the entire Rhineland, the structure occupies an outstanding position, especially since only eight such monuments still exist in the entire Federal Republic today. The genesis of the mill at its current location presumably dates back to 1825. At that time, the facility was imported from the neighboring Netherlands and meticulously reconstructed in Walbeck. An impressive confirmation of this chronology was provided by a comprehensive restoration in 1998: On a supporting beam, the still decipherable year 1825 appeared alongside the initials "A. H." – a wooden testament that, with a high degree of probability, refers to the former proprietor Arnold Hermans. After his death, a historical advertisement from 1836 documents the intention to sell the property. At that time, operated as a pearl barley and sawmill, it explicitly advertised the lucrative option of transforming it into a grain mill. However, as the intended change of ownership did not materialize, the mill – after its actual conversion into a grain mill – remained as a constant inheritance within the family for four more generations. A decisive turning point finally occurred in 1997 when a private enthusiast acquired the historic property and subjected it to a profound renovation, including the foundation. Following this architectural renaissance, the interior underwent an unexpected yet inspiring metamorphosis when a collective of architects temporarily used the venerable premises as a contemporary office refuge.

The old water of the Maas near Lomm, which in the topographical context is often referred to by the term Hoogwatergeul Lomm, presents itself as an equally idyllic and ecologically highly significant side channel of the river. Through synergistic measures of renaturation and flood prevention, this area has been able to establish itself as an essential habitat for a rich population of water birds as well as for the indigenous floodplain vegetation.

Here you can cross the Maas by ferry. But check the opening hours first. I have also stood here too early before. in April 2026, I paid €1.35 as a cyclist

Here the cycle paths are paved, you don't have to go through the heathland, which is more for hikers.
