Very nice area in Taitung. Arts, Craft and Dining in combination.

Part of the Mario Kart Chishan track. Power Upgrade: Cheesy coffee advertisements under lonely trees and people clogging up the street because they want to hug the famous coffee tree. It helps to collect an invincibility star and rush through.

We rented Giant bikes from Giant in Taitung. Best to book them, especially if you are after large sizes. We were told that there are only 10 large bikes to rent from Giant on the island. Touring panniers come with the hire, but it wasn't possible to hire helmets from the bike shop. Check the winds for this 200km road ride ( this was just our first afternoon on the route) as I was told doing it the opp way ie. south to north is kinder when the wind is up.

There are 18 dedicated no-traffic touring cycling routes in the Chungyang Mountains featured in this guide. These routes are designed to offer a peaceful cycling experience away from vehicular traffic.
The Chungyang Mountains experience diverse weather due to their elevation. Generally, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant conditions for touring cycling, with milder temperatures and less rainfall. Summer can be hot and humid, especially at lower elevations, while higher mountain passes might experience colder temperatures and occasional rain in winter.
Yes, many of the no-traffic routes are suitable for families. For instance, the Dapo Pond – Brown Avenue loop from 池上 is an easy 14 km ride with minimal elevation gain, perfect for a relaxed family outing. Another great option is the Brown Avenue loop from Xinxing Village, which is just over 10 km and also very flat.
The terrain varies across the Chungyang Mountains. While many no-traffic routes are well-paved and relatively flat, especially those designed for leisure, some sections might be unpaved or feature gentle inclines. The region is known for its diverse topography, from forested hills to deep canyons, so be prepared for varied surfaces and occasional elevation changes, even on traffic-free paths.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the 觀景台 loop from 關山, which offers a pleasant 17 km ride, and the Coastal Viewpoint – Haibin Park Beach loop from 臺東, a 21 km route with coastal views.
The Chungyang Mountains are rich in natural beauty. While cycling, you might encounter stunning geological formations, lush forests, and serene water features. Notable attractions in the wider region include the dramatic Taroko Gorge Highway, the impressive Qingshui Cliff, and the tranquil Sun Moon Lake (though not directly on all routes, it's a significant regional highlight). Some routes may also pass by local viewpoints or bridges like Changchun Bridge.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from 54 ratings. Reviewers often praise the stunning natural scenery, the peacefulness of the traffic-free paths, and the opportunity to immerse themselves in Taiwan's diverse landscapes, from coastal views to mountain backdrops.
While most no-traffic routes in this guide are easy, there are moderate options for those seeking a longer ride. For example, the Pizza Rock loop from Nanwan Village is a moderate 57 km route with over 300 meters of elevation gain, offering a more extended and engaging experience away from traffic.
Public transport access varies depending on the specific route's starting point. Many towns and villages in the Chungyang Mountains region are accessible by train or bus, which can serve as convenient starting points for your cycling adventure. It's advisable to check local transport schedules and bicycle carriage policies in advance for your chosen route.
Given the varied terrain and potential for changing weather, it's wise to pack layers of clothing, including waterproof gear. Essential items include a helmet, repair kit, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and a fully charged phone. For longer routes, consider a first-aid kit and navigation tools. If you plan to cycle near higher elevations, be prepared for cooler temperatures.
Many of the no-traffic routes pass through or near towns and villages where you can find cafes, restaurants, and various accommodation options. For example, routes around Sun Moon Lake or near larger towns like Taitung will have ample facilities. For more remote sections, it's best to plan ahead and carry enough supplies.
