Athlone lies in the heart of Ireland and, at the same time, on the banks of the mighty River Shannon. It's no wonder, then, that it has long attracted the attention of saints and military leaders alike. Walking through the town, you can truly sense the history of each building—be it the 12th-century castle, the 17th-century barracks, or the 19th-century almshouse, a reminder of the Great Famine in Ireland.

The Great Telescope "Leviathan". It's amazing what had already been researched at that time.

A lovely walk through the gardens of Birr Castle. If you are there at the beginning of June, you will see the flowers in full bloom. The highlight is the telescope in the gardens.

Birr Castle is a large privately owned castle which is the home of the 7th Earl of Rosse and his family so much of the residential areas of the castle are not open to the public. However the grounds and gardens are and this includes the on site science museum and café. Not any science museum though it is actually Ireland's Historic Science Centre. Here is also a reflecting telescope which was at one stage the largest in the world called the Leviathan. All in all it is very impressive, if you have the time go and see and visit.

Listed in both Lonely Planet's "25 of the Most Incredible Bars in the World" and "50 Bars to Blow Your Mind," a visit to Sean's is a must! What's even more amazing is that Sean's Bar has been officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as Ireland's oldest pub
