May 31, 2026, View of Veste Wachsenburg

Wachsenburg is the best-preserved castle of the "Drei Gleichen" (Mühlberg Castle and Gleichen Castle). This condition is thanks to a series of "restorations" and conversions that have taken much of its historical substance. Among the worst architectural sins is the "Hohenloheturm" with gate and battlements, built in 1905 in the form of a Gothic keep as an observation tower. The fortress was built in the mid-10th century as a castle-like structure on the 421 m high Wassenberg. Subsequently, it changed owners frequently. At the end of the 15th century, the castle began to decay. From 1651, Duke Ernst the Pious of Gotha had it rebuilt and secured its water supply with a 93 m deep well. In 1859, the castle's military status was abolished and it was opened to visitors.

On the Gustav-Freytag-Weg and on the northern edge of the Schloßleite forest, there are approximately 60 such sovereign stones of the Electorate of Mainz. They are marked with the Mainz wheel and the number 1777, as well as the consecutive number.
