The Catholic Church of St. Aegidien is the church of the "Neustadt" district of Heiligenstadt. Built around 1330, the church is simpler in form than the city's other two major churches, St. Mary's (Catholic) and St. Martin's (Protestant). Among other things, the striking narrow grooves in the sandstone of the outer southern wall are of interest. These are believed to be marks left by weapons.

Heinrich Heine was baptized as an adult, a Protestant in the staunchly Catholic Eichsfeld region. The reasons for this were, however, rather mundane. H.H., who came from a Jewish family, expected his conversion to Christianity to improve his professional and social prospects. His bust here in the spa gardens is expressive and very well done.

The figure depicting Storm's Regentrude was created by Christoph Haupt in 2007 on the occasion of the 200th birthday of the writer, who spent eight years as a district judge in Heiligenstadt between 1856 and 1864.

The interior is particularly characterized by the three eleven-meter-high choir windows, whose color scheme creates a brilliant light in the nave. The people of Heiligenstadt became aware of the artist Graham Jones through his designs for the Cochem church windows. His use of figurative forms and vibrant colors was very well received. Since 2011, the windows, depicting the Annunciation, Pentecost - the Mission of the Holy Spirit, and the Assumption, have adorned the Provost's Church.
